Happy Super Bowl Sunday! At our meeting last week, we discussed several upcoming service projects and passed around signup sheets for members to volunteer their time for the good of the Crete community. These service events are the backbone of what Rotary is all about. next Saturday morning is the annual Crete Scouting Pancake Feed at the UCC Church in Crete. rotary will be helping with some of the cooking, serving and ticket taking at the door. Later in the month we will assist the Elementary School in Crete with their annual Book Fair. Our members will help on two different evenings at the checkout counter helping the kids and their parents purchase their new books, posters and other "learning" supplies. Many members have already sign up to help at both of these events but there are still a few slots open. A club email will be sent out Monday with the sign-up sheets attached. Please respond to this email if you can fill one of those open slots! Our speaker for the meeting Wednesday was Tyler Ward, a senior at Crete High School and Eagle Scout. He shared his Eagle Scout project with us and the work that went into making it happen. He began wanting to do lending libraries which he determined there were quite a few around town already. Then he thought a Butterfly Habitat would be a good addition to Crete, but discovered space was an issue. Lastly, he worked with the city who gave him the idea of restoring some of the trails near Tuxedo Park. Tyler discovered Driftwood Trail had become overgrown and closed off due to the 2019 flooding. During a first walk through, himself, Aaron with the city, and some other adults found fallen trees and logs on the trail, fallen trees on the dam, and some unsafe tree branches that could fall on pedestrians. Tyler and the scouts went right to work clearing the trail! The city would not let anyone use chain saws for insurance purposes, so all logs had to be cut with a hand saw. The city did come through beforehand and remove some of the larger items which made it a lot easier. A group of adults also came before with weed whackers to clear some of the trail making it somewhat passable. There were a handful of scouts that came for one or two weekends to complete the project. Tyler will be going to Central Community College in Columbus in the fall for a degree in Mechanatronics (a hybrid of mechanics and electronics. Usually work is found in manufacturing). Thank you for sharing your project with the club, and all your hard work on the trail so it can be used by community members for years to come! Our next meeting is February 21st at Doane at the usual time- 5:30pm. We have two possible speakers for the meeting but at press time do not have it finalized. Either way it will be interesting and entertaining! Most importantly we will honor Janet Jeffries, our golden Wheel Recipient for this year and present her with her medallion and certificate. Please make sure you can attend!
