At our meeting this past Wednesday we had the pleasure of hosting our club's 2024 Golden Wheel recipient Janet Jeffries. Janet becomes our second Golden Wheel awardee. Last year we recognized Russ Sears as our inaugural recipient. The Golden Wheel award is given to a person in our community that exemplifies Rotary's motto "Service Above Self". We presented Janet with a framed certificate and a medallion. Thank you, Janet, for joining us, and for all that you do for the greater Crete community! Items of club business discussed included volunteer signup sheets for this week's Elementary School Book Fair and for the CAMC Easter Egg hunt on March 1st. We also began the discussion of potential District 5650 grant project ideas for this coming year. Our speaker for the meeting was our very own Jim Johnson! He spoke to us about his and his wife Pat’s travels! About 2.5-3 years ago, they decided on a goal of visiting every town in every county in Nebraska. When they visit, they drive every street and visit as many notable attractions as they can taking historic photos. They also visit every incorporated and unincorporated town. Some of the counties they’ve visited are Boone County, Fillmore County, Johnson County (this was their first one for obvious reasons), Gage County, Otoe County, and of course Saline, but most recently Richardson. Some of the hidden gems they’ve found is Montz’s Motorcycle Museum in Tecumseh, a former Indian school in Genoa, a covered bridge in Cook, a “zoo” of metal animals a lady purchases from Mexico, has them painted in Texas, then shipped up to Nebraska, and a cold case in 1937 that was finally solved 80 years later in 2017! It was fascinating to hear about their adventures, and we all hope for an update as they go to more places. Thanks for sharing, Jim! Our next meeting is March 13th at 5:30 at Doane. Be there or be square!
